The spiral cable — also referred to as a clock spring, squib, or rotary coupler — consists of a precision coiled ribbon connector inside a moulded plastic carrier, positioned at the steering column and wheel hub interface. The ribbon accommodates the full range of steering wheel rotation without breaking any electrical path, supplying power and signals to the driver airbag pyrotechnic squib, the horn, and every control integrated into the steering wheel (cruise, media, telephone, paddle shifters). Its direct role in the airbag firing circuit makes it safety-critical.
A clicking, crunching, or grinding noise when turning the steering wheel to full lock; an SRS or airbag warning light illuminated on the instrument cluster — the most critical symptom, as it may indicate a broken driver airbag circuit; horn failure or intermittent horn; complete loss of all steering wheel control functions (audio, telephone, cruise control); or visible damage to the internal ribbon conductor.
Safety-critical part. Professional installation is required — the airbag pyrotechnic circuit passes through this unit and incorrect installation can prevent the driver airbag from deploying in a collision. After fitting, all SRS fault codes must be cleared using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
