The TCM is responsible for gear selection, torque converter lockup, and adaptive shift mapping that learns and adapts to the driver’s behaviour over time. Limp-home mode activates automatically on fault detection, and the module maintains constant communication with the engine ECU for coordinated power delivery.
TCM faults commonly present as harsh or jerky gear shifts, the transmission locking into a single limp-home ratio (generally 3rd gear), delayed or denied engagement of Drive or Reverse, absence of kickdown function, and fault codes stored under the transmission control module address in vehicle diagnostics.
