Known variously as a spiral cable, rotary coupler, or squib, the clock spring is a coiled flat-ribbon conductor housed in a moulded plastic cassette positioned between the steering column and the steering wheel hub. As the wheel turns from lock to lock, the internal ribbon coil winds and unwinds to keep every electrical connection unbroken — serving the driver airbag firing circuit, the horn relay, and all wheel-mounted switches including cruise control, audio, telephone, and paddle-shift inputs. Its role in the driver airbag circuit classifies it as a safety-critical part.
Driver airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument cluster — this is the most urgent symptom, indicating the airbag circuit may be broken; horn failure; all steering wheel-mounted controls becoming inactive; a clicking or crunching noise when turning the steering wheel to full lock; or visible physical damage to the ribbon cable.
