The clock spring (spiral cable / rotary coupler) is a flat ribbon conductor coiled in a plastic cassette, seated between the steering column and steering wheel hub. As the wheel turns, the ribbon winds and unwinds, maintaining unbroken electrical connections for the driver airbag pyrotechnic circuit, horn, and all steering wheel-mounted control signals (audio, phone, cruise, paddle shifters). A failed clock spring can disable the driver airbag — making it a safety-critical part.
Driver airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument cluster (most urgent — indicates airbag circuit may be open), horn failure, all steering wheel controls becoming unresponsive, a clicking or snapping noise at full wheel lock, or visible ribbon damage.
