As the central controller of the parking distance warning system, this module provides power to and exchanges data with every ultrasonic sensor installed in the bumper. It measures the round-trip travel time of ultrasound pulses reflected from nearby objects to continuously compute obstacle proximity. The calculated distance is translated into a stepped audible warning — tones growing more rapid as clearance decreases — and, on models with a graphical display, the module drives the proximity visualisation shown in the instrument cluster or iDrive interface. System communication runs across the vehicle CAN bus.
Common symptoms of a faulty PDC module include the parking sensor system failing to activate when reverse is selected, no audible tones during close-range manoeuvring, a continuous warning beep with no obstruction present, a PDC warning indicator or amber symbol displayed in the instrument cluster, or one or more sensors appearing dead while the remaining sensors operate normally.
