The engine control module (ECM/ECU) is the primary management computer for the engine. It processes inputs from the MAF/MAP sensor, throttle position, coolant temperature, oxygen sensors and crank position sensor to control fuel injection timing and duration, ignition timing, idle speed, turbo boost (where fitted), EGR and emission systems. The ECU maps are calibrated to the specific vehicle and engine variant.
Engine not starting or struggling to start, engine running rough or misfiring, poor performance, excessive fuel consumption, engine warning light (MIL), limp mode engaged, idle instability or stalling.
