The active steering control module (Servotronic / variable ratio steering control unit) manages BMW’s electro-hydraulic variable steering ratio system. It adjusts the ratio of steering wheel rotation to front wheel turning angle according to vehicle speed — lighter and more responsive at low speed for parking, stable and precise at motorway speed. It communicates with the engine ECU and DSC over the CAN bus.
Steering unexpectedly heavy or unusually light at all speeds, loss of speed-dependent power assistance, active steering warning light or fault message on the cluster, fault codes for the active steering module in the chassis management system, or a steering pull that cannot be corrected by DSC.
