The clock spring is a coiled ribbon conductor that maintains unbroken electrical connection between the rotating steering wheel and the fixed wiring harness — carrying the driver airbag squib circuit, horn and all steering wheel control signals (audio, phone, cruise). All steering column switch inputs and the airbag circuit pass through this unit.
Driver airbag or SRS warning light (most critical — a failed clock spring disarms the airbag), horn failure, indicator/wiper stalks unresponsive, steering wheel controls (audio, phone, cruise) inactive, SRS fault codes for the spiral cable in the airbag ECU.
