Its job is to measure the amount of air entering the engine and send that data to the engine control system. That signal is used to balance fuel delivery, support efficient combustion, maintain smooth running and help the engine respond correctly under load and acceleration.
Common signs of a faulty unit include poor throttle response, reduced power, uneven idle, increased fuel consumption, smoke under acceleration or a check engine warning. On diesel Mercedes models, a failing sensor can also contribute to limp mode or inconsistent turbo performance.
