The PDC (Park Assist) control module manages the parking distance warning system. It drives the ultrasonic sensors embedded in the front and rear bumper covers, processes the reflected echo data to calculate obstacle distances and generates the escalating audible alert tones that warn the driver as the gap to a nearby object decreases. On models equipped with a visual display, the module also feeds proximity data to the instrument cluster or COMAND screen. The unit communicates with the body electronics and chassis systems over the CAN bus.
Failure symptoms include the parking sensors producing no sound when reverse gear is engaged, audible alert tones absent during low-speed manoeuvring, a continuous beeping tone with no obstacle in range, a PDC warning indicator or fault message appearing on the instrument cluster or COMAND display, or one or more sensor positions becoming unresponsive while the rest of the system continues to operate.
