The PDC (Park Assist) control module is the electronic heart of the parking distance warning system. It provides power to and polls each ultrasonic sensor located in the bumper covers, analyses the reflected pulse data to measure the distance to nearby objects and produces the characteristic graded warning tones that intensify as an obstacle draws closer. On models with a graphical display, the module additionally provides proximity information to the instrument cluster or COMAND system. Communication with body and chassis electronics is conducted via the CAN bus.
Typical signs of module failure are the parking sensor system remaining completely silent when reverse is selected, missing warning tones during close-proximity parking, an incessant beeping when no object is detected, a PDC fault lamp or warning message displayed in the cluster or on the COMAND screen, or individual sensors ceasing to respond while adjacent positions remain functional.
