This 1.4-bar pressure cap seals the coolant expansion tank on the E30, E34, E36, E39 and E46, maintaining the specified system pressure in the cooling circuit and releasing excess pressure through the integral valve at 1.4 bar to prevent hose or tank damage from over-pressurisation.
A cap that no longer holds the correct 1.4-bar rating allows coolant to escape through the overflow at a lower pressure, reduces the coolant’s boiling point and can lead to overheating under sustained engine load or in warm operating conditions.
