Installed in the BMW 5 Series E39, the module takes charge of central locking for all doors and the tailgate, one-touch window operation and the comfort-close function (all windows closing when the remote key lock button is held), interior and courtesy light sequencing at each door event, and boot illumination. Where factory-fitted, heated seats and power-folding mirrors are also governed by this unit.
Failure symptoms include: the central locking system not responding to the remote fob or door buttons; electric windows reverting to conventional held-switch operation; interior lights failing on door opening; the comfort-close window function ceasing; and the boot lid no longer responding to lock/unlock commands with the rest of the car.
