The SZL (Steering Column Switch Centre) module is a combined clock spring and steering angle sensor unit. The clock spring element uses a coiled ribbon conductor to maintain unbroken electrical connections for the driver airbag circuit, horn and steering wheel controls as the wheel rotates. The integrated steering angle sensor element measures the real-time rotational angle and rate of the steering wheel and transmits this to the DSC stability control module, active steering system and other chassis electronics over the CAN bus.
Driver airbag / SRS warning light, horn failure, steering wheel controls dead (clock spring side); PLUS DSC/stability control warning lamp, loss of dynamic stability or active steering function, steering angle sensor fault codes in the DSC or chassis control module (sensor side).
Safety-critical and chassis-critical. Professional installation and BMW ISTA coding required. After fitting: SRS codes must be cleared, steering angle sensor zero-point must be calibrated with wheels straight, and the module may need coding to the VIN. 14-day returns on unmodified parts.
