This fuel filler cap closes the tank inlet on the W220, W210, W202, W208 and R170, providing a secure vapour-tight seal to prevent fuel smell from the filler area, evaporative emission faults and fuel contamination through the filler neck under normal driving and parking conditions.
A faulty or absent fuel cap can trigger an evaporative emission fault in the engine management system, illuminate a check engine or fuel cap warning, and allow fuel vapour to escape from the filler area until the cap is replaced.
