The PDC (Park Assist) control module is the electronic heart of the parking distance warning system. It provides power to and polls each ultrasonic sensor located in the bumper covers, analyses the reflected pulse data to measure the distance to nearby objects and produces the characteristic graded warning tones that intensify as an obstacle draws closer. On models with a graphical display, the module additionally provides proximity information to the instrument cluster or COMAND system. Communication with body and chassis electronics is conducted via the CAN bus.
Common indicators of a defective PDC control module include no audible feedback from the parking sensors on engagement of reverse, the absence of warning tones during low-speed manoeuvres, an unwanted continuous beep with no nearby obstruction, a parking sensor warning or fault symbol appearing on the instrument cluster or COMAND display, or isolated sensor channels becoming non-functional while others remain active.
