This BMW HKM tailgate control module is a genuine OEM electronic component for BMW E38 and E39 models. Primary OEM number 8381988. It is designed to control the electric tailgate functions of the vehicle, including the release and locking of the rear lid or Heckklappe, by processing the signals from the key, the central locking and the tailgate switches, so that the tailgate opens and secures reliably on command.
Its job is to receive the open and close requests, drive the tailgate lock actuator, monitor the position and lock state of the tailgate and report its status to the vehicle network and the instrument cluster. It also protects the actuator by switching it off when the movement is complete. A properly working HKM supports reliable tailgate release, correct locking with the central locking system and correct warning indication in daily use.
Common signs of a faulty unit include a tailgate that does not open from the key or the switch, a tailgate that does not lock, an open tailgate warning that stays on, intermittent operation and stored fault codes for the tailgate module. When the module or its wiring fails, the tailgate may stay shut, the rear lid may not be secured correctly and the central locking may behave irregularly. Water ingress and worn contacts in the tailgate area are common causes of such faults.
