The ABS/ESP control unit processes continuous inputs from all four wheel speed sensors, the yaw rate sensor and the lateral acceleration sensor. During hard braking it modulates brake hydraulic pressure via the ABS hydraulic unit to prevent individual wheels locking. The ESP programme compares actual vehicle yaw with driver steering intent and, when deviation is detected, selectively brakes individual wheels to restore the intended trajectory. The PML (Pneumatic Level) interface additionally communicates with the AIRMATIC suspension system, allowing the ABS/ESP unit to exchange data with ride height and suspension damping control. The module communicates with the engine ECU, instrument cluster, AIRMATIC control unit and hydraulic unit over the CAN bus.

ABS or ESP warning lamps on the instrument cluster, deactivation of anti-lock or stability control functions, suspension-related fault codes stored alongside ABS/ESP codes when AIRMATIC communication is interrupted, stored fault codes readable via Mercedes Star Diagnosis or compatible scan tool, or stability control remaining permanently disabled.
