Кои модули на BMW E38 7-Series са взаимозаменяеми с E39 и E46
The BMW E38, E39 and E46 share a production window that runs from roughly 1994 to 2006, and in several areas they share the same Bosch, Siemens and Hella hardware. The overlap is real but it is not universal: the E38 is a larger, more complex car with more equipment variants, higher electrical loads and, from 1998 onward, early CAN implementation that neither the contemporary E39 nor the E46 used in the same way. Understanding exactly where the sharing works — and where it does not — saves money and avoids a frustrating bench fit that goes nowhere.
Why These Three Platforms Overlap at All
BMW Germany operated on long hardware development cycles during the 1990s. Bosch supplied ABS and DSC hardware across the full saloon range. Siemens supplied instrument cluster electronics across multiple platforms. Hella built the rain-light sensor to a single mechanical envelope that fit E38, E39 and E46 apertures without modification. The result is that, at the individual PCB level, many modules share the same processor, the same connector pinout and the same base software image — but the variant coding stored in EEPROM distinguishes a 735i E38 unit from a 530i E39 unit even when the part numbers look similar.
The second reason for overlap is that BMW’s own part number supersession system collapsed many E38 references into shared E39 replacements during the production run. A dealer replacement for a 1996 E38 ABS unit might carry a part number also listed for the E39 525i. That does not mean the units are identical at firmware level.
Modules That Genuinely Interchange
ABS Control Module (pre-DSC, Bosch 5.3 and 5.7)
The Bosch ABS 5.3 unit fitted to early E38 730i and 740i (1994–1998, pre-DSC) shares its hardware with early E39 520i and 523i and with E46 318i and 320i fitted with the same Bosch variant. Relevant part numbers include 0 265 109 048, 0 265 109 049 and 34 52 1 163 045. These are hydraulic-block-only swaps — the control module and the hydraulic unit are sold separately on E38 and must match. Fitting an E39 control module to an E38 hydraulic block is only safe if the channel configuration (number of wheel speed inputs, brake pressure sensor wiring) is identical. On four-channel systems without pressure sensors, the interchange works. On E38 variants with integrated DSC from 1998, it does not. For comparison, see Кои модули на BMW E39 са взаимозаменяеми с E38 и E46 според варианта.
Rain and Light Sensor
The Hella rain-light sensor (BMW part numbers 61 35 8 379 515 and 61 35 8 375 506) uses the same mechanical housing across E38, E39 and E46. Electrically the connector is identical. The sensor communicates on a simple analogue or single-wire bus — there is no variant coding stored in the unit itself. This is one of the cleanest cross-platform swaps available: pull from any of the three and fit to any of the three, assuming the sensor generation matches (the later E46 units from 2001 onward used an updated module that also reads ambient light for automatic headlamp control).
Cruise Control Module
On E38 and E39 vehicles without the integrated cruise-in-DME architecture (broadly, pre-2000 M52 and M62 engines), the cruise control operates through a standalone Bosch module. Part numbers 65 81 8 352 891 and 65 81 8 362 109 appear in both E38 and E39 parts catalogues. The E46 used a different implementation — cruise was integrated into the DSC or into the instrument cluster on many variants — so direct E46 interchange for cruise control is not applicable.
Comfort Module (GM)
The General Module (GM in BMW terminology, not the American brand) handles central locking, windows and mirror fold on all three platforms. The E38 and E39 GM units share a physical connector layout and a Siemens-built PCB across many variants. Part numbers 61 35 8 375 012 (E38) and 61 35 8 374 232 (E39) are hardware-equivalent at board level. However, the software carries model-specific configuration — number of door zones, sunroof presence, seat memory — which means the unit must be recoded with BMW INPA or DIS after fitting. Without recoding, expect inoperative windows or a constantly recycling lock cycle. The E46 GM is a smaller unit with a different connector and does not interchange with E38 or E39.
Modules That Do Not Interchange Despite Appearances
DME / Engine Control Unit
The DME on E38 and E39 both use Bosch ME 7.2 on M62 TU engines, and the hardware boards are closely related. But the vehicle-order coding, the immobiliser synchronisation with the EWS module, and the throttle-body adaptation maps are specific to each chassis. Fitting an E38 740i DME into an E39 540i will result in an EWS mismatch no-start. Even within the E38 family, a 740i DME will not synchronise to a 735i EWS without a full adaptation cycle. The E46 uses ME 7.2 on the 323i and 328i but with a different EWS generation that is not cross-compatible. Do not interchange DMEs between these platforms without full EWS adaptation and DME coding.
Instrument Cluster
E38, E39 and E46 clusters are visually similar in generation terms but are not interchangeable. The E38 cluster (VDO, part numbers in the 62 11 8 3xx xxx range) uses a different bus message structure and a different mileage storage architecture than the E39 or E46. Fitting an E38 cluster to an E39 will produce incorrect speedometer readings and bus communication faults. Mileage data is stored in the cluster EEPROM; transplanting a cluster between platforms requires EEPROM programming, not just plug-and-play fitting. DSC Module (E38 from 1998)
The integrated DSC fitted to later E38 728i, 730i and 740i (1998–2001) uses a Bosch DSC III unit with pressure sensors and yaw rate input. The E39 DSC unit from the same period carries a similar Bosch designation but different hydraulic port mapping and different wheel speed input calibration. Fitting an E38 DSC module to an E39 hydraulic block will result in incorrect brake pressure regulation and persistent fault codes including 5E10 (DSC pressure sensor implausible) and 5E21 (yaw rate sensor offset). These do not clear with a reset — the mismatch is structural.
OEM Part Numbers to Cross-Reference
- 0 265 109 048 — Bosch ABS 5.3 control unit, E38 pre-1998 / E39 520i–523i compatible
- 61 35 8 379 515 — Hella rain-light sensor, E38 / E39 / E46 (pre-2001)
- 65 81 8 362 109 — Cruise control module, E38 730i / E39 520i–528i
- 61 35 8 375 012 — General Module (comfort), E38 — requires coding after fit
- 61 35 8 374 232 — General Module (comfort), E39 — hardware equivalent to above
- 34 52 1 163 045 — ABS control module, E46 316i–320i Bosch 5.3 variant
Always verify the full part number including suffix and hardware index. Two numbers that differ only in the last two digits may carry different firmware images and different coding requirements. When ordering used OEM units from GiantParts, provide the number from your own unit label — not just the model year — to confirm the correct variant is supplied.
Fault Codes to Expect When an Interchange Fails
- 5E10 — DSC: brake pressure sensor signal implausible (mismatch between module variant and hydraulic block)
- 5E21 — DSC: yaw rate sensor offset out of range (module calibration does not match chassis)
- A000 — EWS: DME and EWS synchronisation fault (DME from wrong chassis or not adapted)
- 9C04 — Comfort module: configuration data not matching vehicle order
- 1B40 — Instrument cluster: CAN timeout, speedometer signal implausible

Често задавани въпроси
Can I fit an E39 ABS module into my E38 without coding?
On pre-DSC, four-channel Bosch 5.3 systems, yes — if the part number core matches and neither vehicle has pressure sensor wiring. The ABS module on these older systems carries no vehicle-specific coding in the conventional sense. On DSC-equipped variants from 1998 onward, the answer is no: the module carries calibration data that is specific to the hydraulic block it was fitted with. For additional context, read Кои BMW E38 7-Series модули са взаимозаменяеми с E39 и E38 варианти.
Does an E38 General Module (comfort module) need coding when fitted to an E39?
Yes. Although the hardware is equivalent, the software carries door zone configuration, sunroof logic and seat memory parameters that differ between E38 and E39 variants. Fitting without coding typically causes window regulators to stop mid-travel or central locking to cycle continuously. BMW INPA with the correct module ident file will write the correct configuration in under ten minutes.
Why does my speedometer read incorrectly after fitting an E38 cluster to an E39?
The speedometer input scaling and the CAN message ID for vehicle speed differ between E38 and E39 cluster variants. The E38 cluster expects a specific pulse-per-kilometre count from the gearbox that does not match what the E39 gearbox outputs. This is not a coding issue — it is a hardware incompatibility. Use the correct E39 cluster part number.
Can the rain-light sensor from an E46 fit an E38?
Pre-2001 E46 sensors use the same housing and connector as E38 and E39, and the swap works. Post-2001 E46 sensors added an ambient light channel for automatic headlamp activation — this extra function simply remains inactive on the E38 because the E38 does not use that input. The sensor itself will not cause faults.
Is the cruise control module from an E38 728i compatible with an E39 520i?
On both M52-engined vehicles built before 2000 with standalone cruise modules, the hardware is compatible and the part numbers overlap. Verify that both vehicles use the stalk-activated cruise design rather than the later steering-column switch variant, which uses a different input signal. After fitting, a throttle actuator adaptation run with DIS or INPA is recommended to confirm correct speed hold behaviour.
