This BMW trailer towbar control module is a genuine OEM electronic component for BMW E70 X5, E71 X6 and E90 models. Primary OEM number 9167198. It is designed to control the trailer socket and the trailer lighting of a vehicle with a factory towbar, by switching the indicators, brake lights and tail lights of the trailer and reporting the trailer connection to the vehicle electronics. The module is installed in the rear of the vehicle and is connected to the trailer socket and the wiring harness.
Its job is to supply and monitor the trailer indicators, brake lights, tail lights and fog light, to detect a connected trailer and to adapt the rear light monitoring of the car so that no false bulb failure warnings appear. It also protects the circuits against overload when a faulty trailer is connected. A properly working towbar module supports correct trailer lighting, safe towing and correct operation of the trailer socket in daily use.
