The ABS/ESP control module is the central processor for the vehicle’s braking stability system. It continuously reads wheel speed data from all four sensors alongside yaw rate and lateral acceleration inputs. ABS prevents wheel lock-up during hard braking by modulating hydraulic pressure at individual corners. ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) detects oversteer and understeer through the yaw rate sensor and corrects trajectory by selectively braking individual wheels and, where fitted, reducing engine torque. BAS (Brake Assist System) detects emergency braking intent from pedal application speed and amplifies braking force, significantly reducing stopping distances in critical situations. The module communicates with the hydraulic unit, engine ECU and instrument cluster over the CAN bus.
Common signs of failure include ABS, ESP or BAS warning lights illuminating on the instrument cluster, deactivation of anti-lock braking, electronic stability control or traction control functions, stored diagnostic fault codes readable via Star Diagnosis or a compatible OBD scanner, erratic brake pedal feedback under hard stops, or the ESP/BAS OFF indicator remaining continuously active.
