The spiral cable — also referred to as a clock spring, squib, or rotary coupler — consists of a precision coiled ribbon connector inside a moulded plastic carrier, positioned at the steering column and wheel hub interface. The ribbon accommodates the full range of steering wheel rotation without breaking any electrical path, supplying power and signals to the driver airbag pyrotechnic squib, the horn, and every control integrated into the steering wheel (cruise, media, telephone, paddle shifters). Its direct role in the airbag firing circuit makes it safety-critical.
A clicking, crunching, or grinding noise when turning the steering wheel to full lock; an SRS or airbag warning light illuminated on the instrument cluster — the most critical symptom, as it may indicate a broken driver airbag circuit; horn failure or intermittent horn; complete loss of all steering wheel control functions (audio, telephone, cruise control); or visible damage to the internal ribbon conductor.
Safety-critical. A qualified technician must perform the installation — the airbag pyrotechnic squib is wired through this unit, and incorrect fitting may prevent airbag deployment in the event of a collision. All SRS fault codes must be reset with diagnostic equipment after replacement.
