Как построена сеть CAN Bus BMW E38 7-Series и что в ней выходит из строя
The BMW E38 does not run a full CAN bus in the way that the E46 and later cars do — it uses an earlier multiplexed system built around a data bus called the K-bus (Karosserie-bus) for body electronics, a separate diagnostic bus, and a point-to-point wiring arrangement for powertrain. Understanding which module is on which bus is the fastest way to make sense of a fault that is producing warning lights across three or four unrelated systems at once.
Network Architecture: K-Bus, D-Bus and Powertrain Links
The E38 predates true CAN implementation in BMW’s body electronics. The architecture divides into three distinct layers:
- K-Bus (Karosserie-bus): Single-wire serial bus running at 9.6 kbit/s. This carries body electronics — instrument cluster, light switch module (LSM), general module (GM), mirror adjustment, central locking, seat memory, sunroof, and window regulators. The bus master is effectively the general module (GM IV). All body ECUs share this wire.
- D-Bus (Diagnostic bus): Used primarily for scan tool access. The diagnostic head connects through pin 20 of the OBD port and bridges to each control unit individually via the diagnostic bus. It is not the same wire as the K-bus.
- Powertrain communication: The DME (Siemens MS41, MS42 or MS43 depending on engine variant) and the EGS transmission module communicate with each other and with the instrument cluster via direct wiring and their own dedicated links rather than a shared body bus. The EGS sends gear position data directly to the cluster and to the DME.
- MOST bus (late E38 only): Very late production E38s with the Business CD or Navigation Professional system added a MOST ring for the audio head unit, CD changer and amplifier. This is entirely separate from the K-bus and only present on cars with the high-end audio option.
This means there is no single CAN gateway in the sense that a W211 or E60 technician would understand. There is no node that bridges all buses. Instead, the instrument cluster acts as a hub for status information — it receives inputs from the K-bus and outputs certain signals to the powertrain via hard-wired connections.
Which Modules Sit Where
| Module | Bus | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| General Module (GM IV) | K-Bus | Central body controller; acts as bus master |
| Instrument Cluster (KOMBI) | K-Bus + direct inputs | Receives speed, fuel level, temp via hard wire; uses K-bus for warning lamp requests |
| Light Switch Module (LSM) | K-Bus | Controls exterior lighting logic |
| EWS III (Immobiliser) | K-Bus + direct DME link | Communicates with DME on a separate wire; K-bus used for diagnostic access only |
| Seat and Mirror Modules | K-Bus | Left and right seat modules for memory functions |
| Sunroof Module | K-Bus | Stand-alone or integrated into GM on some variants |
| DME (MS41/42/43) | Direct wiring + D-Bus for diagnostics | Not on K-bus; has own serial communication to EGS |
| EGS (A5S 440Z or 560Z) | Direct wiring + D-Bus for diagnostics | Serial link to DME; gear data to instrument cluster |
| ABS/ASC+T | Direct wiring + D-Bus for diagnostics | ASC module hard-wired to DME for throttle intervention |
| IHKA Climate Control | K-Bus (late production) | Early E38 used a separate LIN-predecessor bus; mid-cycle refresh moved to K-bus |
| Radio / Navigation | MOST (if fitted) or stand-alone | MOST ring only on late cars with Professional navigation |
What Fails and Why
The K-bus is a single wire shared between a large number of modules. Any module that develops a short on its K-bus transceiver will pull the bus low continuously and silence every other node. The car may show: cluster warning lamps for systems that have not failed, central locking refusing to operate, windows inoperative, seat memory lost, and a scan tool that cannot communicate with any body module. The powertrain usually still runs because the DME is isolated from the K-bus — so the engine starts but the rest of the car appears dead on the bus. For comparison, see Как модуль управления ксеноновыми фарами BMW E38 7-Series выходит из строя.
Finding the guilty module requires disconnecting body ECUs one at a time and checking whether the bus voltage recovers. At idle with all modules communicating correctly, the K-bus should show a square wave switching between approximately 0 V and battery voltage at roughly 9.6 kHz intervals. A completely flat line at 0 V or 12 V indicates a module is holding the line.
The general module (GM IV) is the most common offender. Water enters through the sunroof drain channels and sits inside the passenger footwell on the connector side of the GM. Internal corrosion on the K-bus transceiver IC kills the module’s ability to release the bus. Part numbers covering the E38 GM IV include: 61358368920, 61358380452, 61358381069, and 61358375591. The number must match the options fitted to the car — the GM stores central locking configuration, window one-touch settings and mirror memory.
The light switch module (LSM) fails less often but when it does it presents identically — no K-bus communication, all body systems silent. OEM LSM numbers for E38 include 61318352229 and 61318381616. The instrument cluster can also hold the K-bus low after internal PCB damage, though this is less common than the GM or LSM failing.
Fault Codes Related to Bus Communication
Codes that appear in the E38 context when K-bus or individual node communication fails:
- B200A — No communication from general module (appears in cluster diagnostic memory)
- B2096 — K-bus timeout: cluster received no valid frame within expected interval
- 9000 (EGS) — CAN/serial timeout from DME, often accompanies a loss of throttle data during ASC+T intervention
- 5E10 (ABS/ASC) — ASC module not receiving throttle reduction confirmation from DME — a secondary fault caused by a K-bus issue affecting instrument cluster relay output, not the ASC module itself
- D100 — Instrument cluster internal communication fault, recorded when the cluster loses K-bus contact for more than 60 seconds
It is important to note that most of these codes are secondary effects. The cluster records a fault because it stopped hearing from the GM; the GM is the cause. Replacing the cluster because it logged a fault code is the single most common wrong-turn on E38 body faults.
Powertrain Communication Faults: A Different Path
When the DME and EGS lose communication with each other, the car may shift into limp mode (EGS locks in third gear) with a gearbox warning lamp and code 9000 in the EGS memory. This is not a K-bus fault — it is a failure of the direct serial link between the two units, often caused by a chafed wiring harness at the transmission tunnel or corrosion at the EGS connector on the gearbox. EGS part numbers for E38: 24601423596 (A5S 440Z, 740i/740iL), 24601422945 (A5S 560Z, 750i/750iL). This network architecture applies to all E38 7-Series from 1994 to 2001, covering 728i, 730i, 735i, 740i, 740iL, 750i and 750iL. The late facelift cars from 1999 onward have a revised GM IV with slightly different bus timing and additional function blocks for the new seat ventilation option on some markets. Early 1994–1995 cars use GM III rather than GM IV — the pinout and OEM numbers differ significantly, and the units are not interchangeable despite looking identical externally.
Часто задаваемые вопросы
Can a failed general module on the BMW E38 stop the engine from starting?
Indirectly, yes. The GM IV controls the interior light relay and the EWS ground path on some variants. If the GM fails in a way that disrupts the EWS signal path, the immobiliser may not release. However, the DME does not communicate with the GM directly — so in most cases the engine will still start even when the K-bus is completely dead.
Does the BMW E38 need coding when a used general module is fitted?
Yes. The GM IV stores the vehicle-specific configuration for the number of door modules, window one-touch calibration, central locking variant, mirror fold option, and other equipment flags. A used unit from a differently equipped car will have the wrong configuration and must be recoded with BMW-compatible diagnostic equipment. The VIN does not need to be written into the GM, but the equipment list does.
Why does the K-bus on my E38 work intermittently rather than failing completely?
Intermittent K-bus faults almost always point to a connector or solder joint rather than a dead IC. The GM IV connectors are large 52-pin and 26-pin blocks that corrode at the pins closest to the footwell drain. Reseating the connectors or applying contact treatment sometimes clears the fault for weeks before it returns. Probing K-bus voltage at the instrument cluster connector while wiggling harnesses will usually trigger the fault during inspection. For additional context, read Какие модули BMW E38 7-Series взаимозаменяемы с E39 и вариантами E38.
Is the MOST bus fault on the E38 likely to affect the K-bus?
No. The MOST optical ring on late E38s is entirely separate. A broken fibre or a failed MOST node will silence the audio system and navigation, but it has no electrical connection to the K-bus and will not affect body electronics, central locking or the cluster. Scan tools that access MOST require a separate interface bridging the optical ring.
Can I test the K-bus voltage with a standard multimeter?
A multimeter can tell you if the bus is held low (0 V steady) or high (12 V steady), both of which indicate a node is blocking the bus. It cannot show you the data frames. For proper bus analysis you need either a BMW-compatible oscilloscope function or a scan tool that logs K-bus activity frame by frame. If the multimeter shows approximately 5–7 V with slight fluctuation, the bus is likely communicating — the voltage represents the average of the switching waveform.
