Какво означават кодовете на неизправности на DSC модула на BMW E46 и как да ги тестирате
The BMW E46 DSC module monitors wheel speed, steering angle, lateral acceleration, and hydraulic pressure simultaneously. When it sets a fault code, the code describes what the module could not measure correctly — not necessarily that the module itself has failed. Most E46 DSC codes point to a sensor, a wiring harness, or a hydraulic problem rather than to the control unit. Knowing which code you have and what it is actually measuring is the difference between a correct diagnosis and an unnecessary module replacement.
How the E46 DSC System Is Structured
The E46 uses a Bosch DSC III system, with the hydraulic block and control module assembled as one unit bolted to the front-left corner of the engine bay. Wheel speed signals come from four passive or active sensors depending on build date. The steering angle sensor sits on the steering column and communicates over the CAN bus. The lateral acceleration sensor and yaw rate sensor are located under the front seat, usually on the transmission tunnel. All of these feed into the DSC module, which also drives the ABS valves and the pump motor in the hydraulic unit.
On E46 models built before approximately 2001, the wheel speed sensors are passive inductive types producing an AC signal. From 2001 onward, most markets received active Hall-effect sensors producing a digital square wave. The fault code the module sets differs slightly between these two sensor generations, which is one reason part-number matching matters when buying a replacement module.
Fault Codes: What the Module Is Actually Measuring
5E00 / 5E01 — Wheel Speed Sensor Signal Implausible
This is the most common code family on the E46. The module compares all four wheel speeds against each other and against vehicle speed calculated from the engine and gearbox. A signal that departs too far from the expected value sets 5E00 (front axle) or 5E01 (rear axle). The cause is almost always a failing wheel speed sensor, a dirty tone ring, or a corroded connector at the sensor. A broken tooth on the ABS tone ring produces an intermittent speed spike that sets this code and then clears itself — classic intermittent behaviour that convinces owners the module is faulty when the actual problem is a £12 tone ring or a £25 sensor. For comparison, see Какви кодове за грешки задава DSC модулът на BMW E46 и защо.
5E10 — Steering Angle Sensor Fault
This code sets when the DSC module cannot receive a valid steering angle signal, or when the signal is not calibrated. On the E46, the steering angle sensor is a separate unit in the steering column. It communicates via the CAN bus rather than a direct wire. If the sensor has not been calibrated after a wheel alignment or after the steering column has been disturbed, the module will set 5E10 and disable the DSC stability function while leaving ABS active. Calibration is done with INPA or similar BMW diagnostic software using the steering angle offset function — it is not automatic. Do not condemn the DSC module because of this code without checking calibration status first.
5E20 — Lateral Acceleration or Yaw Rate Sensor Fault
The combined lateral acceleration and yaw rate sensor unit sits on the transmission tunnel and is sensitive to moisture and connector corrosion. This code sets when the DSC module receives a signal from that sensor that is out of the expected range at rest, or when no signal is received at all. Before condemning the sensor itself, inspect the connector: the two-pin plug corrodes easily on cars that have had water ingress into the interior. A resistance check on the sensor supply voltage and the signal line is faster than replacing parts blindly.
5E30 — Hydraulic Pump Motor Fault
This code points to the pump motor inside the hydraulic block, not to the control electronics. The pump runs briefly at start-up as a self-test. If the motor draws too much current or fails to spin, 5E30 sets. On high-mileage E46 units, the pump brushes wear and the motor stalls under cold conditions. Replacing the hydraulic block assembly (motor, valves, and control module together) is the standard repair because the pump motor is not serviceable separately without specialist equipment. A used tested unit from a low-mileage donor is a cost-effective solution here.
5E50 — DSC Module Internal Fault
This is the code that genuinely points to the control unit itself. It sets when the module’s internal self-check finds a processor error, a memory fault, or a voltage supply problem internal to the unit. Before concluding the module is dead, verify the supply voltage at pin 30 and pin 87 of the module connector (should be battery voltage with ignition on) and verify ground integrity at the module’s ground pins. A poor ground connection on the E46 causes the module to see an internal voltage anomaly and set 5E50 even when the module is perfectly healthy. A genuine internal fault confirmed by consistent 5E50 with good supply and ground is one of the few situations where module replacement is the correct first step.
Test Sequence: Separating Sensor Faults from Module Faults
The discipline here is to work outward from the sensors before touching the module. The sequence that wastes the least time and money on an E46 DSC diagnosis is as follows: A related diagnostic guide is Покупка на употребяван DSC модул за BMW E46 3-Series: какво да проверите.
- Read all codes first. Note whether codes are current or stored. A stored code that does not return after a drive cycle suggests an intermittent sensor or connector issue.
- For wheel speed codes, inspect each tone ring visually. Remove the wheel and look at the ring with a light and a mirror. A missing or cracked tooth is visible. Then check sensor air gap and connector condition.
- For steering angle codes, verify calibration before replacing any hardware. This takes three minutes with INPA.
- For yaw and lateral sensor codes, remove the connector, clean it, apply contact spray, and recheck. If the code returns, measure supply voltage and signal voltage at rest before ordering the sensor.
- For pump motor codes, listen at start-up — a healthy pump makes a brief whirr. Silence or a grinding noise confirms a pump problem.
- Only after all sensors and grounds have been verified should the module itself be suspected for code 5E50.

The DSC module on the E46 was produced by Bosch in several hardware and software variants. The part number printed on the module label determines which software version and which sensor type the unit expects. Common E46 DSC module part numbers include:
- 34516756547 — early E46 saloon and coupé, passive sensors, pre-2001
- 34516756548 — E46 touring, passive sensors
- 34516759706 — post-2001 E46 saloon, active sensors
- 34516759707 — post-2001 E46 coupé and convertible, active sensors
- 34516770016 — E46 M3, active sensors, higher hydraulic pressure rating
Fitting a module from an active-sensor car onto a passive-sensor car, or vice versa, will result in persistent wheel speed fault codes that no amount of calibration will clear. The full part number including the build suffix must match the donor car’s specification. GiantParts tests each unit before dispatch and can verify compatibility against your vehicle’s production date and options code list.

All BMW E46 models with DSC as standard or optional equipment are affected by the fault patterns described here: 316i, 318i, 320i, 323i, 325i, 328i, 330i, 316d, 318d, 320d, 330d, and the M3. DSC was optional on early E46 saloons and became standard fitment from around 2000. The E46 Compact (E46/5) received a simpler system on some variants. The DSC3 system used on the E46 is not shared with the E39 or E38 — those platforms used DSC2 — so cross-platform part swapping does not work.
Често задавани въпроси
Can the BMW E46 DSC module cause the ABS light to stay on permanently?
Yes. When the DSC module sets a fault it cannot recover from — particularly code 5E50 or a persistent wheel speed fault — it illuminates both the DSC and ABS warning lights simultaneously. The ABS function is disabled along with DSC in this condition. Clearing the code and road testing will confirm whether the fault is intermittent or fixed. For additional context, read Модул ABS/DSC за BMW E46: Ремонт или замяна?.
Does the BMW E46 DSC module need coding after replacement?
The module itself does not require VIN coding in the same way that an engine DME does, but it does require the steering angle sensor to be calibrated after fitting. On some build variants it also needs a DSC disable switch variant coding if the car has the sport button. Without calibration the system will set 5E10 immediately and will not engage DSC stability control.
Can a faulty wheel speed sensor set a DSC module code rather than a sensor code?
It can, particularly when the sensor signal is intermittently present. The module may set a generic DSC fault alongside a wheel speed code, or it may set only the DSC fault if the wheel speed data arrives corrupted rather than absent. Always check the sensors before the module, even when the code appears to point inward.
Is it safe to drive an E46 with DSC fault codes present?
ABS usually remains functional even when DSC is disabled by a fault. However, if the hydraulic pump fault code 5E30 is present, ABS operation may also be compromised because the pump is needed during an ABS braking event. Driving without confirmed ABS function in wet or slippery conditions is a safety risk and should be avoided.
What is the difference between the E46 DSC module and the ABS module?
On the E46 with DSC, there is one combined unit — the DSC module contains the ABS control logic, the DSC stability logic, and the hydraulic valves all in one assembly. E46 models without DSC have a simpler ABS-only unit that is a different, smaller assembly. The two are not interchangeable, and the connectors are different.
